The 2016 Games come to Selborne

As the Olympics get going in Rio, in Selborne we are looking forward to a much more unusual set of games, Gilbert’s Games. On the 13th-14th August, Gilbert White & The Oates Collections will once again be celebrating their annual family summer event.

2016 Games
Take a step back in time with your family and take part in games and sports such as Aunt Sally and Stool Ball! Challenge Gilbert White to a game of Croquet, and see if you can roll a prize melon up Baker’s Hill. There will a wide range of old fashioned and family friendly games and challenges for you to have a go at, as well as stalls and local crafts; such as spinning, pottery, jewellery, buttons, and knot tying! We’ll be joined all weekend by Hampshire Cultural Trust as well, who will be running children’s activities and a handling collection.

A new addition to the event on Saturday 13th will be a Falconry display, hosted by Mere Down Falconry. Mere Down have done falconry displays at country shows and events all over the South of England, but this the first time they’ve visited Selborne. Once a popular sport, falconry would have been something that Gilbert White would have been extremely interested in. We can’t wait to see which of the owls, falcons, kestrels, kites, eagles and peregrines; we will get the chance to meet!
On Sunday 14th we will be joined by the Hampshire Regency Dancers, who will be showcasing dances known to Gilbert White & Jane Austen, with an opportunity for you to try your hand at a turn around the room. Plus everyone’s favourite Ferrets will return, brought this year by Surrey Ferret Rescue. Meet and handle the ferrets and learn more about what Surrey Ferret Rescue do. At the end of the day on Sunday there will be a prize for the best Eighteenth Century inspired costume, whilst not at all compulsory is very much encouraged!

Entry is £8 for adults and £3 for children. The house and gardens will be open as usual, and entry is included in the discounted event admission. Come inside the house and meet some of Gilbert White’s family who will be more than happy to show you around and tell you a little about life in the Eighteenth Century.

Of course Gilbert White’s Tea Parlour will be pulling out the stops for some wonderful refreshments, or why not bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful gardens? Whilst enjoying a fantastic day out, great fun for all ages and a wonderful way to perfect your Stool Ball technique for Rio!2016 Games
