Antarctica as an Experience: The Last Great Wilderness on the Planet

by Roger Slade
Antarctica’s wealth lies not in animal, vegetable or mineral resources but in the continuation of its unique status as a peaceful, free, open, unmilitarised land of international co-operation, scientific research and unsullied beauty. Roger Slade, an Antarctic photographer and traveller of many years’ experience, considers it to be probably the most beautiful and awesome place any of us are ever likely to see in a lifetime of travel and exploration. Only around 150,000 people have ever set foot on the continent of Antarctica in the whole of historic time.
Join Roger in this beautifully illustrated ‘tour’ of the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands and also the sub Antarctic islands of South Georgia and the Falklands.

Exhibition: Maggie Bonsey - Button Up
Maggie Bonsey’s work centres around her interest in the relationships that many of us have with objects; those objects that we choose to keep and collect. Is it because of the stories and mysteries that become entwined within them and which affects and alters our perceptions of them? Her family button box, containing buttons accumulated over four generations, was the inspiration for the work in this exhibition. These small irrelevant objects that were once saved for their perceived usefulness have become a collection of memories, stories and mysteries.

The Unknown Gilbert White: Preacher and Sermon Writer
By Louis Coulson, with Ronald Davidson-Houston
Gilbert White’s “Natural History” turned him and the village of Selborne into household names. His journals and letters, being works of art in themselves, have been analysed in depth for centuries. However, his sermons form the one major body of work by Gilbert White that has been neglected. Louis Coulson considers these sermons to be a body of writing and a key to ideas and culture of the time. Consumed with curiosity, he has spent two years searching for and discovering these sermons, culminating in this fascinating presentation, helped along by readings from the texts by Ronnie Davidson-Houston.
£10.50, includes wine or soft drink and nibbles
