Love was certainly in the air last week at Gilbert White’s House!
We love our friends, volunteers and supporters all year round but it’s important to show it, and that’s exactly what the day was all about. Friends and Volunteers from all walks of Museum life came together with staff for a pleasant day of treats and socialising.
The day was also in the hope of welcoming new friends and volunteers and various members of staff had put together tables showing what kind of thing Volunteers might get up to in their department. The Education team headed by Louise, even had a trail, where any keen volunteers could follow the coordinates to find the hidden chocolate in the room.
Coffee, Tea and biscuits were readily available and the morning was spent in lively conversation. Just before lunch our directors Judith and Steve told us about just how important volunteers are to the Museum. In 2015 our volunteers racked up an impressive 5,092.75 hours, that’s roughly 212 days of volunteer time. We just couldn’t cope without them!
In 2015 our volunteers have spent hours making on-site Jams & Chutneys from produce from the garden, now bestsellers in our shop! Our Sewing Circle have made lots of costumes for Children to try on in the Museum. And the house glistened all through Christmas with a beautiful display of decorations ands flower arrangements all thanks to volunteers! We now have a fab team of dedicated collections volunteers that we began at our We love of Friends and Volunteer Day last year! Last November a corporate volunteer team from the University of Surrey, helped us to build a bed for our collection of Dianthuses!
We also in the past 12 months have awarded twenty volunteers who had donated 30 plus hours (some much much more) with honorary friends membership! The Friends this year have also had plenty of successes, in February they organised a wonderful talk on Climate Change at the Alton Malting’s and in July Alexandra Shackleton came to the Museum to talk about her grandfather at the Friends Summer Party. In November the friends had a huge success with a Canapé Workshop! Proving what great advantages there are to joining the Friends.
We awarded our Volunteer of the year award to Denise Liddle; Denise helps us with everything, from events, to clearing out spaces, to the invaluable support she gives our finance officer, Debbie.
Then of course was lunch! Our Catering team did a wonderful job again which a beautiful lunch for all our well-deserved supporters and even a little for the staff too!
If you missed our day but are interested in joining our volunteer team or our Friends just let us know by e-mailing us!
