It’s that time of year again when we start gearing up for big family weekend.
This year Gilbert’s Games is on the 5th and 6th August and it’s a special date as the event enjoys its 10th year! We will also be commemorating the bicentenary of Jane Austen, another of Alton’s literary giants, with ‘Jane’s Games’ where you can have a go at playing the games mentioned in Austen’s novels and letters. Why not see if you match Austen’s skill at bibliocatch? Learn to best the Crawford’s at cards and make ship that will be the prize of Nelson’s fleet.
This year we have all the old favourites back such as the Hampshire Regency Dancers and Ferret racing as well as a great collection of games and pastimes popular in the time of Gilbert White including Aunt Sally, Croquet, Stool Ball, Melon Rolling and a Coconut Shie. There will be stallholders from all over the region demonstrating traditional crafts and selling locally made gifts.
There’s also plenty of new things to look out for including the fantastic Dandy Chargers who ride wooden ‘horses’ that are a precursor to the bicycle and popular in the Regency Era. This year the event is sponsored by local games company Esdevium Games who will be providing a board games area. Say hello to Gilbert White himself (and maybe challenge him to a game or two) and plenty of other historical characters.
Entry to the house and gardens is included in the discounted price of the event (£8 adults, £2 children) We’ll have first class catering both at our Tea Parlour for some eighteenth century elegance and outside with all the action. This is the perfect summer event for all the family to enjoy.
