2015 was one of Gilbert White & The Oates Collections best ever years! However we at Gilbert White’s are now looking forward to a jammed packed year in 2016! We thought we’d share with our Museum Events 2016.
January is already off to a flying start with our first event a Twelfth Night Feast just around the corner! This will be the first time we’ve worked with Foot in the Door Theatre a local Winchester Theatre Group, and we’re looking forward to an evening of mirth and merriment on the 10th!
On the 16th we’ll be joining the Friends of the Museum for a Winter Welly Walk, a great family event to learn more about the gardens here at Gilbert White’s, with a mug of something warm and a bacon roll at the end of it… perfect!
Is a month of lectures and PENGUINS! We’ll be joined by Antarctic Explorer Tim Jarvis. In 2013 Jarvis replicated Shackletons ‘double’, using only 1916 equipment. He is visiting the Museum to talk about his expeditions, his beliefs and current climate change issues. We’re also joined in February by Ronnie Davidson-Houston who will be talking about his collection of White’s the Natural History of Selborne, which he donated to the museum in 2010.
For Half Term, we’ll be running a series of Antarctic themed events including a new trail called A Penguin’s Guide to Antarctica.’
March will begin with a wonderful Mother’s Day event, followed by on the 10th a lecture by Iain Alexander on his book ‘The English Love Affair with Nature’. The month will end with a jammed packed schedule of family events over the Easter Holidays at the Museum; with everything from African crafts, weather themed activities and family orienteering. And that’s just not all 2016 has to offer!
After the Easter holidays, we’ll enjoy the beautiful wild flower meadow and look forward to the 30th where we have our first garden workshop of the year, all about cottage garden container’s run by our very knowledgeable garden team.
May is an exciting month for Museum events in 2016! Sleepovers for families, informative talks and workshops on plenty of subjects, and our first ever Nature Weekend! A whole weekend celebrating nature and those helping to preserve it, we’ll be joined by lots of large conservation organisations, with family friendly activities and all sorts!
Half Term’s theme in June is butterflies, always a favourite here in Selborne!
June also marks our biggest event of 2016! Our Unusual Plants Fair, this year it coincides with two other great events, a celebration of Roses on the evening of the 20th and a talk on 18th Century gardening tools on the 21st! Not to be missed.
July is all about nature, with the Summer Holidays beginning with family geo-coaching trail, wildlife mobile craft sessions for kids, and a talk on Herb Gardening. Looks like we’ll be spending out July enjoying the great outdoors!
The Summer continues with child friendly crafts such as birdhouses, and campfire themed projects. Our annual Gilbert’s Games is on the 13th and 14th of August, one our most popular Museum Events! We finish off the Summer’s festivities with Chapterhouse Theatre returning to our lawn with their 2016 production of Hound of the Baskervilles! A must for any Sherlock Holmes fans!
Autumn is a beautiful time at the museum, with the garden slowly transitioning into beautiful Autumn colour! Look out for our Heritage Open Day events!
Will bring the last of our museum garden events with a workshop in Willow Weaving, there will be children’s activities for all interests from Autumn Leaves, Owls, Art, our famous Timothy the Tortoise Trail and a Spooky Museums at Night Sleepover.
As the nights draw in join us for the second annual Selborne Bonfire night! November is the perfect time to get a head start in your Christmas shopping, and warming yourself with a piping hot vegetable soup made from the produce in our garden in our Tea Parlour.
Our annual Mulled Wine Weekend this year will be the 3rd and 4th December, the air will be crisp, the apple tree will be in need of a wassail, the carols shall be sung and we’ll start looking forward to 2017!
So as you see 2016 is going to be the best yet for Museum Events! See you in Selborne soon!
