Selborne to Oxford
THE FIRST DAY – 27TH APRIL – SELBORNE TO SHALDEN
Ronnie Davidson-Houston as Gilbert White on Gilbert’s pony ‘Mouse’
We have finally started, and 33 walkers departed from Gilbert White’s House this morning. Today’s walk to Shalden from Selborne went without major hitches. Nobody got run over, despite having to cross the A31 on foot, no-one sprained anything and the first aid kit went unused. We had wonderful weather, and set off accompanied by Gilbert White on his pony, Mouse, and Captain Oates leading his pony, through the dandelions of the meadow at Gilbert White’s House. We were seen off by the whole of Selborne School, who lined the route across the meadow. The views were amazing on Bush Down and again nearing Shalden, and everywhere there were bluebells, violets, borage, comfrey , anemones, celadines and violets blooming under the wonderful fresh green trees springing into leaf. We were royally entertained at Chawton House Library with lavender biscuits and home made lemonade, and lunched on the green in Chawton. Tea and juice was on hand at Shalden Farm, from where we start on the next leg tomorrow.
