‘Woven Nature’ Workshop

21st September 10am-4:30pm

A day discovering traditional skills blended with colourful design to create a landscape inspired by Gilbert White’s garden.
This all-day creative workshop will show you how to weave a simple hoop of willow and introduce you to the basics of the
tradition of Dorset Button making, led by Hampshire creative Rachel Hartland.
Artist-in-residence Sophie Hacker will also explore Gilbert White’s garden with participants as you develop ideas for your small
wall-hanging.

Materials will be provided, including willow, threads, upcycled items and a variety of natural fibres, however participants are
encouraged to bring along any fabric scraps, ribbons and old jewellery that might be appropriate.

The day will be based in the barn of the Gilbert White Field Studies Centre. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks will be provided
by the catering team at Gilbert White’s. Please bring your own packed lunch.

Tickets are £45 per person.

About Rachel Hartland: The daughter of a wildlife manager, Rachel Hartland grew up in the New Forest. She studied Agricultural Economics in
Aberystwyth where she met her husband, a Biology teacher. Following a short career in leisure management, parenthood and a
developing Christian ministry became her focus. Rachel always turned to the countryside and gardening to relax, most recently
learning some traditional creative skills. She developed a contemporary, sustainable approach to the tradition of Dorset Button
making during the pandemic, and is now focusing on expanding her understanding and use of natural fibres as she encourages
others to explore their own creative skills.
