Gilbert White’s House & Garden’s has been selected by the Royal Horticultural Society as one of nine new Partner Garden’s for 2024.
In the news announced by the RHS this December, they named the Selborne garden inspired by the work and life of naturalist Gilbert White, as one of just nine new UK gardens to be added.
Gilbert White’s Garden is a reconstruction of the 18th Century naturalist’s garden using heritage plants that White mentions in his diaries or were popular in the 1700’s. It includes quirky features like White’s Winepipe seat made from a barrel which provided the perfect bird hide, and the statue of Hercules that isn’t quite what it seems from a distance. Today the garden is gardened in a way that is a close to 18th century methods as possible and promotes biodiversity and sustainability.
To become a partner garden the garden was assessed by the RHS to ensure it met with the high standards members of the RHS expect. If you are a member of the RHS you can (from January 2nd) visit Gilbert White’s Garden for free on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays along with other perks.
2024 is great year to visit Gilbert White’s Garden with a new programme of free with admission garden events. For more information on what is happening in Gilbert’s Garden and how you can visit gilbertwhiteshouse.org.uk.
